Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an AI/Machine Learning Research Scientist to support the development of fundamentals for GeoAI imagery processing and self-supervised learning methods for large vision-language models, enabling downstream imagery perception tasks including object detection and counting, visual question answering, semantic segmentation, and change detection. This position resides in the GeoAI Research Group within the Geographic Data Science Section, Geospatial Science and Human Security Division, National Security Sciences Directorate. Major responsibilities include developing imagery preprocessing pipelines for satellite data, executing workflows for finetuning geospatial vision models, processing large volumes of satellite imagery, designing computer vision techniques, and publishing research findings. Required qualifications: PhD in electrical/civil engineering or geoinformation science; 4+ years applied experience; GPU-accelerated ML training on HPC systems; satellite imagery preprocessing workflow experience; and proficiency in Python or similar languages within the PyTorch framework. Preferred: experience with spatio-temporal datasets and distributed computing. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance (Sensitive Compartmented Information). Salary range $145,170-$177,430; remote-eligible in pre-approved locations.
