The United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) is seeking a GIS Intern to support the UN Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC) Data Unit in New York City. This is a 6-month internship assignment that creates a candidate pool for vacancies between January 2026 and January 2027. The UNOCC Data Unit conducts integrated analysis, modelling and data engineering informing UN leadership on country risk assessments and crisis trends. The intern will produce GIS maps for operational support, advocacy, awareness-raising, and strategic planning purposes. Responsibilities center on supporting geospatial analysis for peace and security operations. Required qualifications include fluent spoken and written English, relevant coursework in GIS, remote sensing, cartography, spatial analysis, modeling, geospatial programming, or data management, and team collaboration skills with reliability and clear communication. Preferred: knowledge of additional UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish). Flexible scheduling accommodating in-person, remote, or hybrid work arrangements.
