The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division at ORNL seeks engineers to develop next-generation geospatial software and data strategies for federal operational awareness products, designing, implementing, and maintaining user-facing geospatial applications across energy, transportation, and related domains. Major responsibilities: design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain geospatial software; choose a specialization in Frontend (interactive web UIs and visualization), Backend (APIs and data services), or Full Stack; translate research requirements into software designs; implement quality assurance, security practices, and CI/CD workflows; collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. Basic qualifications: B.S. or M.S. in Geography, Data Science, Computer Science, or related field plus 2+ years of experience; proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Java, C++, or Go; modern software engineering practices (version control, testing, code review); strong communication and collaboration skills. Preferred qualifications: frontend expertise with React/Angular/Vue and geospatial tools (Mapbox, Cesium, OpenLayers); backend skills with RESTful APIs, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and data processing (ETL/Parquet); Docker/Kubernetes experience; Agile development and geospatial data workflow familiarity.
