Planet Labs is building an AI Geospatial Assistant product group to transform how customers interact with global satellite imagery, and is seeking a Software Engineer for their Applied GenAI Apps team in San Francisco, CA. The role focuses on creating an intuitive interface that requires zero user training for solving forensics and change detection problems using satellite imagery. Key responsibilities include leading full-stack AI web application development with emphasis on frontend, collaborating with AI researchers to translate complex analytical outputs into clear visualizations, developing side-by-side map and chat layouts balancing novice accessibility with GIS expert functionality, implementing trust-building features including data badges and clickable citations, creating exportable visualizations and time-series animations, optimizing performance for satellite imagery loading and complex data overlays, engineering sophisticated frontend/backend communication patterns including WebSocket implementations, and managing state for multimodal conversations. Required qualifications: 4+ years full-stack or frontend engineering experience, expertise in modern frameworks (React or Vue), Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent, proficiency with mapping libraries (Mapbox GL JS or Leaflet), experience building LLM chat interfaces for production applications. Preferred: geospatial visualization background, AI/ML team collaboration, D3.js or Plotly expertise. Full-time hybrid position (3 days/week in SF office). Salary range: $144,500-$180,600.
