The Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) is seeking a Spatial Data Scientist to join its research team in Nairobi, Kenya. This position supports global research programs on forests, trees, and agroforestry through advanced geospatial analysis and data science. Key responsibilities include developing machine learning models for land cover classification and change detection using satellite imagery, building automated geospatial data processing pipelines using Python and Google Earth Engine, conducting spatial analysis of deforestation drivers and forest degradation patterns, creating interactive web mapping applications and dashboards for research dissemination, managing cloud-based geospatial computing infrastructure, supporting fieldwork data integration with remote sensing products, publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and mentoring junior researchers in geospatial methods. Requirements include a Master's degree or PhD in geography, remote sensing, geoinformatics, data science, or related field, plus 3-5 years of experience in applied geospatial research. Strong programming skills in Python (with geospatial libraries), experience with Google Earth Engine, and familiarity with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, scikit-learn) required.
