About the Department

The Center for Geospatial Analytics (CGA) at North Carolina State University is a premier interdisciplinary hub dedicated to addressing grand challenges through spatial data science and geospatial analytics. The Center offers a vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Geovisualization Lab, where we pioneer cutting-edge open source tools and geospatial approaches. By working across departmental boundaries—spanning computer science, engineering, natural resources, and the social sciences—staff and faculty engage in high-impact projects that range from ecological disease and wildfire ecology to urban growth and agricultural intelligence. The Center's academic programs, including the unique Ph.D. in Geospatial Analytics, Graduate Certificate in GIS, the top-ranked professional Master's in Geospatial Information Science and Technology (MGIST) and undergraduate minor in Geospatial Analytics, are designed to train the next generation of interdisciplinary data scientists and geospatial professionals.

Essential Job Duties

The Center for Geospatial Analytics is seeking a highly qualified instructor to join our academic programs at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor (non-tenure). The candidates we are seeking are forward-looking instructors with a strong background in both foundational geospatial concepts and skills alongside modern approaches, such as open-source and cloud-based/native platforms, WebGIS, GeoAI, Geospatial Data Science, and a strong interest in innovative geospatial pedagogy and dedication to student success. This is a full-time, 9-month professional track faculty position with an initial contract of three (3) years, with opportunities for multiple renewals and advancement based on annual performance reviews and progress. In this role, you will shape students' learning experiences through 15–18 credit hours of teaching each academic year across the Fall and Spring terms.

Teaching responsibilities will include:

  • An undergraduate- or graduate-level introductory GIS course (3 credit hours)
  • The undergraduate Minor Capstone Course, Geospatial Analytics in Practice (1 credit hour; Fall and Spring)
  • Two additional undergraduate courses, or a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses, based on program needs and the candidate's interests. Potential topics for new courses include, but are not limited to, Geospatial AI, Geospatial Ethics, AI and Data Literacy in GIS, Environmental/Public Health/Hydrological Applications, and Geospatial Communication and Cartography.

Service and engagement responsibilities include participation in the Center's academic community through student advising and mentoring, including serving as an academic advisor for a portion of MGIST students, and participation in committees in support of program-level initiatives and outreach, as requested.

Minimum Education and Experience

PhD in GIS, Geospatial Science, Geospatial Analytics, Computational Geography, Remote Sensing, Planning, or a closely related field with demonstrated teaching experience at the university level. Additionally, for consideration at the Associate Teaching Professor level, a minimum of 5 years of geospatial/GIS-related teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience teaching at least one university-level course in GIS or a closely related field
  • Proficiency in GIS technologies (ArcGIS Pro/Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, QGIS, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience working with geospatial data and analytical workflows
  • Familiarity with computational and/or scripting approaches used in GIS (e.g., Arcade, Python, R, SQL, JavaScript)
  • Ability to design aligned course components, including learning objectives, assignments, and assessments that clearly support student learning outcomes
  • Familiarity with AI platforms used in instruction (i.e., Google Gemini, Notebook LM, ChatGPT) and geospatial-specific AI tools (ArcGIS AI Assistants, QGIS AI, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of university-level teaching experience as instructor of record, including at least one undergraduate- or graduate-level GIS course
  • Background teaching students in online, synchronous, and/or asynchronous settings, with the ability to support student learning in large-enrollment courses
  • Course development skills, with an interest in creating new courses and strengthening the Center's evolving curriculum
  • Experience with Open Source GIS platforms (GRASS, QGIS, etc.)
