Position Overview
Mohave County's Information Technology Department seeks a GIS Technician to maintain geographic information systems by creating and updating digital maps, managing spatial data, conducting research, and supporting county operations. This full-time role is primarily office-based with occasional fieldwork, operating Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, with possible weekend work depending on project needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, edit, and maintain GIS databases and digital maps.
- Produce cartographic products, reports, charts, and demographic data.
- Research and update land use, parcel, and geographic information.
- Work with ESRI ArcGIS software and GIS databases.
- Perform quality control and data validation.
- Provide customer service to county departments and the public.
- Update and maintain GIS databases; collect and maintain source data.
- Edit graphic and attribute components of geographic databases.
- Perform data automation using digitizing or coordinate geometry techniques.
- Create plot command files and use plotting macros for cartographic products.
- Write documentation recording procedures used in automating and editing data.
- Respond to demographic information requests and produce related reports.
- Produce charts, graphics, and spreadsheets displaying demographic and census data.
- Assist with updating land use studies using development data and photo interpretation.
- Perform research of county records for data entry into the GIS.
- Handle map and digital data requests from the public and other departments.
- Assist with routine GIS hardware and equipment maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- College coursework in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, Planning, or a related field.
- One year of experience with GIS, computerized mapping, surveying, field data collection, or related technical work.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training may satisfy requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Graphics, Computer Mapping, CAD, or a related field.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Principles, practices, and methods of Geographical Information Systems; ESRI ArcGIS desktop software (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) version 8.x or above; GIS database design, concepts, conventions, and management; GIS data conversion and maintenance; mapping and computer-aided design/drafting principles; cartographic principles; reading and interpreting graphs, charts, diagrams, aerial photos, and maps; digitizing, plotting, and drafting techniques; reading and interpreting survey notes, plan diagrams, specifications, and legal descriptions; problem identification and resolution for GIS hardware and software; county records research capabilities.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range 13, Steps 1-8: $21.09-$25.93 hourly; $43,867.20-$53,934.40 annually. Paid Time Off accruing 6.5 hours biweekly, 11 paid holidays, Arizona State Retirement System enrollment with 11.98% contribution and 100% employer match from day one, medical/dental/vision insurance, short-term disability, basic life insurance, Teladoc, flexible spending accounts, and up to 80% of medical premiums paid by the County.
