GIS Coordinator

The GIS Coordinator’s primary purpose is to plan, design, manage, and maintain utility geospatial information to support activities such as utility system operations and maintenance, plan review, asset management, modeling, and master planning. Work is performed under the supervision of the Utility Engineering Supervisor and will lead the GIS Team while orchestrating complex GIS endeavors that drive tangible impact. In this role, you will serve as a trusted GIS leader and subject matter expert, partnering with utility professionals across Cary to ensure accurate, accessible, and innovative geospatial information supports critical decision-making.

Typical Tasks

• Provides GIS leadership for planning, design, management, improvement, and maintenance of utility GIS systems and data
• Coordinates and monitors daily tasks of two Utility GIS Specialists; provides technical training
• Serves as utility GIS program liaison and subject matter expert
• Manages periodic GIS improvement projects and data acquisition surveys
• Creates and maintains utility GIS standards, procedures, and best practices
• Trains staff on GIS use and assists with analysis and problem resolution
• Coordinates communication between utility GIS and other Cary systems
• Performs other job-related tasks as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of civil engineering practices; ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, and ArcGIS Online; storm water and utility project methods; modern infrastructure design techniques. Ability to perform engineering computations, use analytical skills for complex problem-solving, maintain accurate records, establish effective working relationships, communicate technical information clearly, use programming languages (Python, Arcade, VBScript), read engineering drawings, create customized GIS reports, model spatial data, exercise sound judgment, work independently and collaboratively, manage projects.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Information Systems/Technology, or related field plus considerable GIS experience in engineering, utilities, and project management. GISP certification strongly preferred. 5+ years with ESRI software preferred. Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required. Drug testing and background check required prior to employment.

Salary: $80,059.20 - $132,080.00 Annually (anticipated hiring range: $80,059.20 - $95,700.80; higher pay possible with relevant certifications and experience)
