Arizona State University's School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning seeks a Research Scientist specializing in Geospatial Artificial Intelligence. This position supports the Spatial Analysis Research Center (SPARC) and involves developing and applying machine learning methods to geospatial problems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research on geospatial AI applications including deep learning for remote sensing image classification and object detection
  • Developing novel spatial machine learning algorithms and geostatistical methods
  • Building cloud-based geospatial processing workflows using Google Earth Engine and AWS
  • Publishing research findings in top-tier journals and presenting at international conferences
  • Mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral researchers
  • Writing grant proposals to federal agencies (NSF, NASA, DOE)
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary research teams across the university
  • Contributing to the development of open-source geospatial AI tools

Requirements include a PhD in geography, GIS, computer science, or related field with a focus on geospatial AI or spatial data science. Strong publication record in geospatial AI, deep learning, or spatial analysis required. Proficiency in Python, TensorFlow/PyTorch, and geospatial libraries essential. Experience with high-performance computing and cloud platforms preferred.
